Fibre is regarded as the holygrail of broadband, while we can't deny its good, there are a multitude of products on the market which aren't offered by all providers which mean you could be getting above 100Mb's today and without fibre.
Before BT went fully fibre on their new build they put G.Fast into hundreds of homes, but only 1 in 10 providers even offer it, G.Fast offers up to 300Mbs and is available today.
The majority of fibre build in the UK is G.PON, which stands for Gigabit (it can go 1000Mb/s) Passive (its not powered) Optical (uses glass/fibre) Network. Current G.Pon allows up to 32 premises to share 2.5Gb/s of bandwidth with speeds of up to 900Mb/s per user. It's presented as Ethernet and you'll almost definitely need to replace your router to see the benefits, a push bike is no use on a motorway.
